The Portuguese company Displax is the next organisation surfing the crest of the multi-touch wave by introducing its thinner-than-paper polemic multi-touch skin. By skin, they mean it can be skinned over any surface, transforming that area into a multi-touch device reactive to both pressure and moving air (which means even blowing on it will have an effect). Over 18 months in the making, Nokia’s Symbian OS goes from closed platform to completely open source in what the organisation is calling “The biggest open source migration project ever”. Nokia has watched its operating system’s business, which it co-owned until it completed a buyout in 2008, eroded due to pressure from its closed-platform counterpart iPhone OS and the semi-closed platform Android. As such, Nokia hopes opening the code to the software and powering over 330 million phones will breathe life back into the platform. (Read more…)

It was recently reported that the Amazon Kindle eBooks pricing of $9.99 crumbled due in no small part to Apple. Apple promised publishers it would support an alternative pricing model to Amazon’s that came with a pricing ceiling of $14.99. The eBook pricing upheaval has occured at an astonishing pace. Last week Amazon removed book publishing giant MacMillan’s entire catalogue off of its website due to MacMillan demanding the right to price their bestsellers at $12.99 and $14.99 on the Amazon Kindle store. A few days later, presumably crumbling to the sheer weight of MacMillan’s catalogue, Amazon reposted the publisher’s books to its site as well as sent out an accompanying passive-aggressive statement to its readers about the decision. In preempting Apple’s big iPad announcement, Microsoft and HP announced a Slate PC they have been collaborating on. Steve Ballmer at CES announced the device during Microsoft’s press conference. A free laptop scheme, in the interest of bridging academic excellence between wealthy and poor students, has been launched in the United Kingdom. The Home Access programme, which is in its pilot phase, is set to cost £300 million, and will provide computers to 270,000 English families. (Read more…)
