Meebo, the chat web application that consolidates all your online instant messaging activities into one location, is now available for the iPhone.

Millions and millions more

Millions of people use Meebo, because it’s so simple. It pretty much works as promised, and for those who do not want to create a Meebo account, they can access their specific IM from Meebo’s site without registering. Meebo, as college students around the world have noted, even has the advantage of circumventing proxy blocks for instant messaging applications since it works in a browser, garnering it passionate and loyal supporters. Supporting AIM, Messenger, Jabber, ICQ, Google talk, Myspace IM, Yahoo, Facebook as well as other lesser chat applications, Meebo’s victory – and its inherent popularity – was won through its ability to consolidate the very fragmented instant messaging and chat space on the Internet.

The company now hopes millions more will be attracted to their platform through their free iPhone application now available on the App Store.

Simplified and fast

Initial impressions suggest the application is blindingly fast. Switching between accounts is a cinch, and the messaging interface is very responsive. The interface is also very simple, in that there are three main areas: ‘Chats’, ‘Buddies’ and ‘Accounts’. Chats tracks your various chats, who you’re friends with across services is managed by Buddies, and Accounts allows you to toggle general settings.

Towards ubiquity

Application developers have realised that computing and web work is experiencing a rapid shift toward mobile devices. Research firm Gartner predicts the mobile web will be used more than its desktop equivalent by 2013. Meebo and various other web application developers are preparing for this shift by moving their programs to the most ubiquitous mobile devices as well. Meebo for the iPhone is available right now, and its absolutely free.
