To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Apple used WWDC 2010 as the platform for formally announcing a slew of Apple results, with the iPhone 3GS’ successor taking centre stage.

The physical

First the formal name – it is called the iPhone 4. Apple, surprisingly, opted to call it the most obvious name, indicating where in Apple’s phones timeline it sits – as the fourth iPhone. Measuring in at just 9.6mm thin, Apple has called its new handset the ‘thinnest smartphone on the planet’. Accompanying the slimming down in size is a boost in vitality, with the iPhone’s battery life being increased by 40 per cent.

Display

The iPhone 4’s display has also been updated, but it is not OLED, sadly. The WVGA screen’s resolution has been bumped up to a resolution of 960×640, outstripping some of the best displays on the market.

The iPhone 4 finally has the long rumoured front-facing camera – for video calling over apps – with LED flash. This LED flash will also be used as a spotlight when needed for Apple’s newly boosted 720p HD video recording at 30fps functionality.

Release

The iPhone 4 will ship with iOS 4 (the new name for Apple’s mobile operating system) built in. A 24 June release date has been confirmed for the UK, too, with Vodafone, O2 and Orange already confirmed as carriers.

Gizmodo stole that buzz, in fairness

Between the Gizmodo leak, as well as the various handsets found in Vietnam and Eastern Europe, it’s proven very difficult to be excited about this particular iPhone announcement. And this is not to say the handset is not exciting, but rather the reveal is not exciting. For several months now we have known that the phone would have a front-facing camera. We also heard news of the boost in resolution ages ago, too, and the general form factor is unsurprising, since it looks so similar to the screenshots leaked earlier this year. But it is likely Apple will ship boatloads of these.

Do you intend on picking up the latest iPhone?
