The Nokia 5800 Xpress is easily one of our favourite Nokia devices of recent years. Even though it was always positioned as a mid-range device, it showed off the engineering capability and creativity Nokia has seemingly lacked since the middle of the last decade.

If an ad seen in a magazine in Hong Kong is any indication, the phone finally has a successor in the Nokia C7, which will sport Symbian^3.

Early specs

The Nokia C7 has a 3.3-inch capacitive touchscreen, with a resolution of 640×360. Nokia tote that it’s ‘near HD’ but it’s a long way off from ‘1280 x 720’, the base requirement, I think we can agree, for a display to be called high definition. It does take high definition imagery, though, with the Nokia C7 packing an 8MP camera as well as 720p video recording.

Symbian^3 promise holds

The big deal is it will be rocking Symbian^3 OS. This you will remember is in line with Nokia’s promise to put Symbian^3 OS on all its mid to lower range of mobile phones while MeeGo will be aimed at the Nokia N-series devices. Though key leaders in the company seemed to backtrack on that statement a bit, from an execution perspective it appears they are holding firm to it, and we couldn’t be happier with them.

The Noka 5800 Xpress Music was an exceptional device. Now with Symbian^3, Nokia’s midrange devices have a pretty compelling platform and pack a punch, all the while leaving the important Nokia N-series to a mobile OS capable of competing with Google Android, iOS and BlackBerry 6 OS.

Pricing and availability

With this coming out of China, naturally there aren’t any details on UK availability or pricing. But we’ll be watching the Nokia C7 with a keen eye, all the while wondering if it can capture the allure of the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music before it.

And, perhaps more importantly, if it can split Nokia’s mid-range and high-range of phones in a way that’s simple to understand – Nokia N-series to compete with the big boys, and Symbian OS^3 to spar with and dominate the not-so-big boys.
