It wasn’t too long ago that any LCD monitors were rare and priced to oblivion. Now the CRT monitor has all but given way to LCD monitors and, as the technology gets entrenched, so do prices plummet. Manufacturers have staved off this price drop by introducing larger and larger monitors at the previous price of smaller equivalents. Those of us who are wise to this know that, for most of us 19” is the sweet spot between price, size and function and there are many decent 19” LCD monitors that meet this criteria.

Very good monitors

Samsung is the leading LCD TV maker in the world and for good reason. The company has managed to balance the circus act of having fantastic displays at agreeable prices and coupled that with aggressive marketing campaings. Their 19” monitors range from so-so yet very cheap to rather impressive and agreeably priced. The Samsung SyncMaster 933HD is widescreen (which is a must) with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.. It has a myriad of connection points, including 2x HDMI ports, 1 DVI-D port, and the usual VGA port, meaning you can plug a host of devices into it. At £150 it isn’t cheap for its relatively diminutive size, but its shiny black bezeled finish couple with gorgeous display makes up for that somewhat.

LG’s recently released LG E1940S is also a stellar 19” monitor at a more agreeably price than the Samsung SyncMaster 933HD. It is priced in and around £100 if you shop around carefully, with comparable features to the Samsung SyncMaster 933HD.

For those on a super tight budget

As hinted earlier, some 19” monitors can be had dirt cheap, but you have to keep in mind that you get what you pay for. The first thing you will not get for budget monitors is widescreen. The classic 1280 x 1024 resolution still reigns high in the budget monitor game. Also, your connection slot is usually limited to just VGA, meaning outside of your tower you’re unlikely to connect much else. If this does not phase you, careful scouring of sites like eBay reveals deals like this Acer AL1916 for a measly £18. That’s about the price of dinner for two at an inexpensive restaurants, meaning you’d do best to not expect too much.
