The iPad may not have the last word on the e-reader. Tech fans eagerly awaiting the release of the next generation of the Kindle reader will be thrilled to learn that Amazon recently acquired Touchco, a touchscreen technology company, and is rumoured to be developing the Kindle 3 ebook, complete with a flexible, transparent, multitouch display.

The latest Kindle reader would have the most sensitive touch technology to date - rumoured to be able to detect more touches than humans have digits! More exciting still, the Kindle ebook is expected to boast full-colour display with the potential of animation, according to Geek.com.

Is Jeff Bezos making the right move?

While early adopters are frothing at the mouth at the potential of a new and shiny Kindle reader, some e-reader stalwarts are less confident that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is making the right move by competing with the Apple iPad.

‘E-reader technology will soon be a feature in all multi-function devices’, claims one critic, boasting of the iPad’s multi-functionality and colour display. In opposition, a Kindle reader fan argues that the iPad’s IPS screen doesn’t stand up to the Kindle ebook’s e-ink display, which is infinitely kinder on readers’ eyes, or the Kindle reader’s battery life – two weeks as compared to the iPad’s 10 hours. And for those who are there for the goods rather than the technology, the Kindle ebook offers more books for sale at lower prices than the iPad.

Hopefully, Amazon’s purchase of Touchco will give the Kindle reader the leg up it needs to remain the leading e-reader device.
