Microsoft has finally snagged the big mobile game it’s been after – cultural icon Angry Birds is headed to the Windows Phone 7 platform. Pigs everywhere should find somewhere safe to hide, with the title crash landing onto the platform on 25 May.
Lots, and lots, and lots of levels
Angry Birds WP7 will be on Microsoft’s Xbox Live part of the app marketplace. The title will ship with 195 levels day one, and will sell a ton of copies. Insofar as the success of Windows Phone 7 is comparable to that seen on Android and iOS, it’s likely the title’s spin-offs like Rio and Seasons will make an appearance on the app marketplace, too.
Rovio has become very good at making a boatload of money off the franchise. I’m pretty confident in saying they will do so again.
Getting past the controversy
Microsoft and Rovio have clearly patched things up. MS had erroneously announced Angry Birds would come to the platform during the buildup to the Windows Phone 7 release – an oversight Rovio was not impressed with.
At the time, we wrote: ‘Microsoft posted an image of hugely popular mobile game Angry Birds on its Phone 7. Turns out Rovio, the makers of the title, never gave MS permission to do so. In a tweet, the company writes: “We have NOT committed to doing a Windows Phone 7 version. Microsoft put the Angry Birds icon on their site without our permission.” Ouch.’
Windows Phone 7 momentum
Angry Birds Windows Phone 7 confirms the platform certainly resonates with developers. Microsoft is desperate to get a strong foothold in the smartphone OS space, and while Google Android may have an early lead in terms of sales, many believe Microsoft have a compelling product on their hands.
For gamers, Angry Birds Windows Phone 7 all but confirms that.
