Valve fans uncover the secret that Portal 2 is steaming towards release and Valve is expected to show it next to Steam for Mac at GDC.

Valve mania

Some companies need to throw a ton of money at dead-simple easy-to-understand advertising campaigns to get the word out for their products. Valve is on the opposite scale, making painstakingly difficult AR campaigns to unearth information that a new game is coming out of the developer.

When it updated Portal, Valve dropped breadcrumbs for its fans, hinting at something new that led to a thread on the company’s forum with over 500 pages of responses. Valve came out and said what many gamers have been dying to hear since November 2007: Portal 2 is finally on the way.

Game Informer cover story

Game Informer has the official cover story for this and is set to reveal details in its next issue. Leaked scans reveal that the game will support co-op multiplayer as well as a ton of new features.

Portal fanfare

Portal, a game where, as the name suggests, you use portals created with a specialised gun to transfer between locations, was a breakout hit in Valve’s Orange Box video game collection. The title was praised for being ingenious in design as well as exceptionally funny for a video game.

It spawned various Internet memes like the saying ‘the cake is a lie’ and had a theme song that transcended the game in itself. Portal 2, if the Game Informer cover is anything to go by, expands the series by allowing players to go outdoors for the first time, introducing a new environment.

News of the long-awaited sequel has spread like wildfire across the Internet and Valve, being known for their relentless focus on quality, has a lot of pressure to deliver a title worthy of a Portal follow-up. They did it with Half Life, Team Fortress and Left 4 Dead, though, so it would be unwise to bet against them delivering the goods.

Portal 2 releases on 26 October 2010.

  1. yeah, but valve/steam always has a tendancy to release the games later then the projected date…alot later, so dont put your hopes to high on the release date, but it will be a fun game xD

  2. Odd… That screenshot looks awfully similar to the scene of the Ark being revealed in Halo 3… Maybe a few changed models and environments, but really similar.

  3. @GregW17
That screenshot is from Half Life 2 Episode 1, not Portal 2.
