Archos have finally revealed their entries into the tablet war, confirming the arrival of the Archos 7 home tablet and the Archos 8 home tablet. Archos are taking a two-pronged strategy of releasing the mobile handheld 7 series and the photo frame design-based 8 series. The prices for these Android OS- powered tablets are highly competitive, with the 7 series retailing as low as £129.99, and the 8 series retailing at £129.99. The Android tablet one-two runs on a 600Mhz processor, plays full multimedia, and lets users browse the web.

How the two match up

The Archos 7 is the smaller of the two tablet devices with a 7-inch touch screen, weighing in at 0.8 pounds and only 12 mm thick. It is easily the more portable of the two tablets, given the handheld design of the tablet. The Archos 8, however, is well designed to display media such as pictures and video content with the addition of a bezel, which allows the tablet to be easily propped up like a photo frame around the house or office. It also allows for a range of services such as Cookineo, an Android recipes app, which makes it perfect for use in the kitchen.

Services available on the Android tablet include full social networking integration, email and scheduling apps to make coordinating the household an easier task. The Archos 8 is 12mm thick and weighs a mere 0.9 pounds with an eight-inch touch screen. The picture frame design of the tablet may however prove a little excessive for the more the on-the-go user. The Archos 7 is the mobile user’s solution, with built-in wi-fi, USB connection and a more than average battery life allowing approximately seven hours of video playback and 44 hours of playing music. How the Archos tablets will compete with the likes of the HP Slate and Apple’s iPad will depend on how much one is willing to spend for a tablet. Archos has also announced that more powerful tablets can be expected in the near future

Similar, but different

The Archos tablets at first glance seem like two very different products, but a closer look inside the tablets reveals two similar tablets, which are well designed and positioned to deliver the goods to specific carefully selected markets. The 7 series home tablet does however have a slight advantage over the 8 series home tablet as a result of its portability and slightly better technical capabilities.

The Archos Android tablet pair will be available in May 2010.
