Microsoft’s 2010 MIX Conference has been touted as one of the company’s most important, with announcements pertaining to the Windows Phone 7 Series platform anticipated. Microsoft has also taken the opportunity, however, to show the gathering of web developers and designers its latest web browser – Internet Explorer 9.
The goods
The immediate impression onlookers got was that IE9 was really fast. Not quite ‘Safari fast’, let alone as fast as the blindingly quick Chrome and Opera browsers, but certainly a major step up over IE8 and, most importantly, faster than Firefox.

Microsoft has indicated that IE9 will support HTML5 as well as all the new web standards like CSS3. Also, the fact that modern browser development requires modern operating systems has been taken by many to mean that Internet Explorer 9 will not support the most ubiquitous operating system: Windows XP. This, one imagines, is a sign Microsoft want to push the Windows XP hangers-on to finally adopting Windows 7, its current operating system (and, incidentally, the fastest selling OS in history).
Microsoft’s browser development
In related news, Microsoft recently said goodbye to IE6, the long-standing browser that meets very few web development standards, yet still accounting for a considerable percentage of all browsing traffic around the world. The browser’s slow death was sped up by the announcement that YouTube would stop supporting it, with the implication being that Google as a whole – as well as others – would also move away from supporting the browser.
Additionally, Microsoft recently had a web browser ballot where it presented Internet Explorer users in Europe with randomly generated browser options. This move was a result of an agreement with the European Union over alleged anti-competitive practices in the web browser market. With Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft looks to prove that its Internet Explorer browsers are the most widely used on merit and not just because they come packed in with the operating system.
IE9 is still in preview, with Microsoft still to announce the release date.
