Imo.im is the answer for Internet users looking to merge their various instant messenger accounts and use them from one platform. It puts together multiple instants messengers into one IM window, and no registration is required. Imo makes instant messaging on the web over just a that little bit easier.

Imo.im is the brainchild of one of the first Google employees, Georges Harik. And the design ideology of keeping it simple - learned, tried and tested at Google, seems to have been carried over into the ever-growing IM project. Imo currently works with the major instant messengers such as Google, MSN, AIM, Jabber, ICQ, MySpace, Yahoo and, more recently, Facebook Chat. Voice and video chat is also possible through Skype.

Imo.im’s features

A photo sharing tool, broadcast feature and whiteboard tool are also available on imo. The broadcast feature also allows imo users to broadcast a message to a large number of other imo users. The whiteboard tool allows users to draw on the instant messenger app and the photo sharing tool allows photos to be shared and viewed across all networks. So far, the instant messaging aggregator seems to have all of its bases covered, with its only limitation that it’s currently only available on Windows.

One of the standout features of the imo.im is the chat history feature, allowing users to search through their entire chat history in a simple and effective way. This feature is one of many which will allow imo  to take on the already established IM client, Meebo. Imo is also hard at work developing a mobile-based app to be used on mobile devices; a list of other future tweaks to imo.im is also available here.

Imo.im as an instant messenger aggregator is sure to become a hit. The simple interface and current lack of ad spam makes it an encouraging development in the IM space. The ability of imo.im to also be made available on other operating systems and platforms will determine its success.

  1. Awesome post, Dean! One thing I wanted to clarify is that we currently only have a Windows client, but since we are a web-based application, you can access imo (https://imo.im/) through most browsers on any platform. I prefer the web-based version as there are more features such as file sharing, photo sharing, a collaborative whiteboard, and chat history. If you have any additional questions, please email me: marissa@imo.im. Thanks!
