Apple has sold 1 million iPads in just 28 days, spurred on by the release of the iPad 3G. This makes the iPad one of the fastest selling consumer devices of all-time, and a no-brainer major hit for Apple.
Faster than the iPhone
The Apple tablet reached this milestone in just 28 days, which is ‘less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone’ said Steve Jobs in a statement. Apple’s CEO also took the opportunity to drive home his point that the iPad was ‘a magical device’ by strategically including the phrase in his statement.
Three hundred thousand iPad 3Gs
The iPad 3G played a large part in propelling the Apple tablet over that threshold with an estimated 300,000 units moved over its opening weekend.

Jobs added that ‘demand continued to exceed supply’, with major Apple Stores across the US being out of stock. Certain Best Buys in fringe locales were said to still have some limited number of stock. If one casts their mind back to mid-April, this demand-supply imbalance was also a primary contributor to the delay of the iPad’s release in Europe.
Millions everywhere
In addition to selling one million units, Apple revealed that over 12 million iPad apps and 1.5 million iBooks ebooks had been downloaded, too. This averages applications per iPad to about 12, with over 5,000 different applications already available.
Three market leaders
With the iPad, iPhone and iPod, Apple is leading three industries – tablets, smartphones, and personal music players. The company previously revealed that they had sold over 50 million iPhones and 35 million iPod Touches, with these Apple tablet numbers only further confirming Apple’s ability to rack up major hits.
This performance not only validates the Apple tablet as a viable product, but goes a long way to establishing the tablet market place. Whether Apple will remain tablet market leaders for the foreseeable future depends on what their competitors release, but 1 million is a considerable deficit to overturn.
