Remember that Modern Warfare 2 game every body kicked a huff about because of that terrorist airport scene? That same game that destroyed all entertainment opening records by moving 4.7 million units in one day? It has gone on to become the biggest selling game in British history.
Super quick flip
What’s most remarkable about the report by Gfk Chart-Track is that Modern Warfare 2 sales have achieved this feat in just 41 weeks. The previous all-time best seller Brain Age 2 displaced Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as the all time best seller after 31 months.
Still on the fence? Jump in!
What’s more is that it is likely many gamers have yet to play Modern Warfare 2, and in the coming months, just before Call of Duty: Black Ops launches, the game of the year edition will be released, as will bargain-bin sales of the title across the nation, too. This will likely cause another spike in sales of the title. And, to be fair to the game, if you haven’t played it yet and you have even a remote like for first-person shooters, jump in and buy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 already!
Seven pillars
In talking about their latest smash hit, StarCraft II, Activision Blizzard, who reap the rewards of Modern Warfare 2 sales, recently called COD: MW2 one of its seven pillars of opportunity. Each of these pillars represented franchises that Activision Blizzard believed had the potential to gross north of $1 billion in revenues (around £650 million plus). Activision Blizzard’s seven pillars of opportunity are the Call of Duty Franchise, World of WarCraft, StarCraft II, Diablo III, Guitar Hero, a new unannounced Blizzard MMO and the upcoming Bungie IP.
Modern Warfare 2 sales from day one have been unreal and it is little surprise it ended up being this massive. The big question the Nostradamus in you needs to answer is: what, if anything, will ever unseat this title at the top of the sales food chain? C’mon, give it a guess!
