UK Police Getting Technical Support in Bid to Fight Crime
By Wilson • Jan 5th, 2009 • Category: Industry NewsThe latest buzz in the technology market is not about solid state drives (SSDs). It’s not about next generation netbooks either, or the latest and newest enhanced portable devices. No, today’s headlines are about the technical aid that the cops in the country are currently receiving.
Police forces across the country will receive £30 million so that they can purchase various handheld computers to help themselves in the fight against crime. When the cops get more advanced portable devices they will be able to spend more time in the streets tracking the miss-happenings in real time, rather than sitting at their desk in the police stations. It will cost around £1600 per laptop that will be delivered to the cops. Well for that amount we could almost purchase a quad core laptop like the rock Xtreme SL8-Q9300. The cost also includes round the clock technical support from the backend and training that will be given to the cops regarding how to use the gadgets in most effective manner, so the actual laptop itself does cost less.
The project will cover 25 forces nationwide. Around 30,000 handheld computers will be delivered to the police personnel. It is estimated that this technical aid will be very helpful as the cops will save around 30 minutes or so for each shift and they will be able to exchange data with the headquarters on the go.
According to the Deputy Chief Constable Simon Cole of the Hampshire Constabulary, “We welcome this funding for handheld computers. These computers are valuable tool for a modern police officer. Patrolling officers with access to databases, such as the Police National Computer, command and control and intelligence systems, will spend less time returning to the station and more time on the frontline, increasing visibility and reassuring the public.”
