Risk of iPad delay into April

In a classic case of analysts saying whatever they choose, Peter Misek of Canaccord Adams claims there’s a risk of an iPad delay into April.

Production problems

He cites unspecified problems with production over at Hon Hai Precision, an iPad manufacturer. These problems, claims Misek, mean around 300,000 iPads will be ready for the original March launch date. For Apple, this represents too few available units.

Great demand not a certainty

So, there will be an iPad delay. With regards to the shortage claim, it’s very hard to fault Misek. A widely discussed, yet unproven, device from a company like Apple is likely to either be in great demand, or met with complete disinterest by consumers. But whether the iPad will only be released in April remains to be seen.

Delay is simply not good enough

It has been clear throughout technology history that any gadget that is in huge demand or captures the collective imagination of the tech media will be in shortage. Every single major video game console, the iPhone 3G and even the iPhone 3GS in some regions of the world has suffered this problem. Apple is likely to parlay the consumer excitement and shortage and spin it as a positive. Something along the lines of ‘we simply cannot make enough to satisfy consumer desire.’

Speculation over soon

What is clear, whether the iPad is delayed or not, is that the rumours and speculation will soon come to an end. People will have iPads in their hands before the end of April. And then, Steve Jobs’ claim of how remarkable the product is will be put to the test.
