Fire Hazards: Sony Laptop Batteries Recalled

Sony laptop batteries are being recalled by the mobile computing giants such as HP, DELL and Toshiba on account of fire hazards. Around 100,000 laptop batteries are found to be affected. The main issue is that these batteries get overheated quickly resulting in chances that they may catch on fire and burst due to intense heat. If this happens, then apart from the damage caused to the laptop, the users could potentially be seriously burned as well.

Companies like HP, DELL and Toshiba have already issued recalls for Sony batteries that were used in their laptops. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has asked consumers not to use the recalled products anymore. The affected batteries were manufactured between October 2004 and June 2005. Till date there have been 40 incidents of battery overheating reported globally.

According to Sony, the main reason behind battery malfunction is manufacturing line adjustments and a flaw in raw material. Around 35000 batteries out of 100000 were used in the laptops that were shipped in the US. Batteries that have a barcode label beginning with A0, L0, L1 or GC and that were used in HP Pavilion dv1000, dv8000 and zd8000, Compaq Presario v2000 and v2400 machines, HP Compaq nc6110, nc6120, nc6140, nc6220, nc6230,nx4800, nx4820, nx6110, nx6120 and nx9600 computers, Toshiba Satellite A70/A75, P30/P5, M30X/M35X and M50/M55 laptops and Tecra A3, A5 and S2 computers, Dell Latitude 110L and Inspiron 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150 and 5160 laptops. Fortunately, users of newer models made within the last 2 years, such as the Toshiba Tecra A10-112, are unaffected. However, if you have those machines that have recalled batteries installed then immediately contact your PC vendor and ask for a replacement.
