Mobile computing devices are the talk of the town nowadays. Laptops, notebooks, netbooks, sub-netbooks and palmtops are all in great demand. Such devices continue to become smarter day by day and offer unprecedented performance and connectivity on the move. Consumers too, can always expect something new and refreshing from their mobile computing devices.

Despite all the jaw dropping developments and achievements that have taken place in the field of mobile computing in recent years, developers continue to face a major problem in pushing the technology to the next higher level. The main issue is the lack of standardisation of applications and hardware platforms. This leads to stringent application programming interfaces that directly hinder the development process. So, there is an urgent need for a platform that can be used to foster the growth and development of mobile computing devices and Intel Moblin is projected solution for this dilemma.

Basically Moblin is an open source software development community aiming to develop SDKs (software development kits) for open source software that is to be designed for devices based on the Intel Atom processor, like the Acer Aspire One A150 netbook, and other Intel Ultra-Mobile CPU architectures. Moblin will offer multiple utilities for open source application and platform development on MID-based hardware devices. It currently contains a Linux based development platform for mobile devices and is released under GPL license.
