Amilo Mini: the Fuijistu-Siemens Netbook will be introduced at the IFA Consumer Electronics Exhibition

There have already been rumours circulating for the past few months, which assert Fujitsu-Siemens Computers are planning to enter the booming netbook industry. And now the company has announced the “Amilo Mini”, to be presented at the 2008 IFA Consumer Electronics Exhibition in Berlin, although additional details have yet to be released.

Fujitsu-Siemens only announced two concrete details in their press release: Intel’s Atom N270 will be used as the processor, and the basic surface of the Amilo Mini measures 23 x 17.5 centimetres. That makes the FSC netbook half a centimetre lower and wider than the Asus Eee PC901. Accordingly, the display will likely be 8.9 inches, although the manufacturer has yet to confirm this.

We must also guess at all other details and specifications, based on two short YouTube clips of the netbook that have surfaced – except for the price, which FSC puts in the £300 range. The company has also confirmed, after being asked, that the computer will include a hard disk drive, and not a SSD. Given the compact casing, we can expect a 1.8 inch drive. The manufacturer has yet to reveal how heavy the netbook is, or how long its runs on a battery.

In a YouTube video from an unknown source, we see the Amilo Mini sitting on a support and the audio connections are located on the front of the computer – an unusual move for netbooks.

Whether these videos really concern unofficial material, or are just part of some viral marketing campaign, remains unclear. FSC officially wants to introduce the Amilo Mini in Berlin on August 29th 2008, while they say the product will start shipping in the autumn of 2008. By then other netbooks from renowned manufacturers like HP and Dell will have already been released.
