Nvidia’s Ion graphics chipset has received a green signal from Microsoft Corp. Nvidia revealed that the Ion platform will be a next generation piece of hardware offering hi definition graphics in Notebooks running on Windows Vista and Linux. The Ion platform is aimed at netbooks that have a display size of 10 inches or less. Nvidia has already started working with Microsoft and other PC manufacturers to launch PCs based on its Ion platform this summer.

According to Nvidia, the Ion chipset will perfectly complement Intel’s Atom chips and deliver unprecedented graphics in netbooks like the Acer Aspire One A150. This new chipset is the best alternative to the two Intel chipsets that are being used today, i.e. the 945GSE and the I/O controller hub 7. Nvidia claims that the new Ion-Atom combo will boost the display capabilities of the mobile computing device by 10 percent as compared to the Intel-only netbooks. Ion will enable full 1080p display on future mini-laptops. It’s a boon for the pro gamers and for those who appreciate high definition movies on the go. Once paired with Intel’s Atom processor, the Ion will play video games built on Microsoft’s DirectX 10 graphics technology in Vista. It will also make it exciting to use the Vista’s graphics features such as Aero Glass and Flip3D. The company also revealed that the Ion is affordably priced and will be available for $300 (around £210).
