While most consumers never fiddle with their desktops and care only if their desktops work, enthusiasts know all about selecting the right type of motherboard and the right motherboard itself when building a home system. Here’s a profile on the once ubiquitous but slowly declining Socket 775 motherboard category.

Wait, what is socket 775?

Socket 775, which is known also as Socket T or LGA 775, is an Intel CPU socket. It supported connections for a range of Intel processors all the way up to the Intel Core 2 series. Only recently with the introduction of the Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5 and the Intel Core i7 was a new socket type – Socket 1156 – introduced. This in effect has meant that the LGA 775 motherboards have slowly begun fading from prominence. But this is partly a good thing, too, because it means for those not pining for the latest processor types and speeds, you can pick up a very capable computer built on the Socket T framework for cheap. And you know how much we love thrifty.

Notable entries

While there are many great socket 775 motherboards, some stand head and shoulders above the rest.

As has been the case for years, now, the best selling and most popular motherboards are made by Asus. One of its more recent entries in the LGA 775 motherboards game is the Asus P5G41C-M LX. And even though the Socket 1156 motherboards are getting all the attention these days, it’s not as if their ageing siblings are slackers either. For a give away price of under £40, you can grab yourself a motherboard that supports DDR3 and DDR2, with two slots dedicated to each, on-board sound and a system with a max FSB of 1333MHz. It’s the price tag that’s the show stopper, if not the board’s capabilities itself.

Verdict

Socket T boards will find use in some notebooks for some time and the odd budget desktops, but they are certainly in rapid decline mode. Socket 1156 will eventually nudge them out of the market completely, but if all you’re trying to do is build a budget system that can do the occasional heavy lifting, this computer configuration may work out for you.
