Ericsson Looking Forward to Common APIs for Smartphones

By Dean • Dec 16th, 2008 • Category: Uncategorized

One can find numerous smartphones of different companies in the market nowadays running on different operating systems. Every smartphone has its own features and supports applications according to its operating system, like Symbian or Windows Mobile. This however creates a problem at some point of time because of the lack of cross-compatibility. The application programming interfaces (APIs) developed for one smartphone may not be suitable for some other smartphone.

To address such issues Ericsson wants to develop a common platform for the development of Application Programming Interfaces or APIs. The company is eager to help in defining a common set of APIs so that a number of programmes and services can be used on different smartphones, like using applications from the Symbian run Nokia N96 on a BlackBerry RIM OS. Ericsson wants to improve the global communication services and aims to bring Internet speed to mobile phones and provide Internet companies with access to open mobile APIs and create mash ups.

This is, however, still only a concept and is not materialised or implemented in any manner. It may take several more years to launch such a common API, but once developed, it will have a substantial impact on the smartphone industry. The smartphone makers will be able to develop in-depth relationships with all of the major mobile operators and yes the smartphone users will also get advantage of that.
