There is new exciting twist to musical entertainment in the form of slotMusic. In fact, companies are now planning to release albums on micro SD cards as an alternative to CDs, all because of the slotMusic technology.

slotMusic allows you to transport and play music directly from microSD memory cards, in much the same manner as you would play music from a CD. But of course a microSD memory card has many advantages over a CD, not the least of which is size and portability. Consumer trends reflect the decreasing popularity of CDs and the increased popularity of carrying music on data cards. As a result many major distributors are now planning to release full albums in MP3 format, without any copy protections, on 1GB microSD cards, which they term slotMusic.

Market research indicates that in the near future slotMusic will become a major source of entertainment and it will generate more sales than standard audio CDs. The slotMusic package will contain a fully loaded microSD card and a USB dongle so that the users can attach it to their PCs. That way, it won’t even be necessary for you to have your own separate card reader like the Kingston DTCR. According to Daniel Schreiber, who heads the audio-video business unit at SanDisk that created the slotMusic technology, “Particularly in this kind of economic climate, the idea of being able to use an electronic device you already own to enjoy music rather than going out and buying a dedicated player is pretty compelling.” Right now there is no information regarding the release of the slotMusic and how many albums will be available in this format initially, but it is definitely a welcome move in the right direction.
