HP Pavilion dv5z: Small, Solid and Stellar 15 inch Laptop

By Wilson • Jan 13th, 2009 • Category: Laptops

Small notebooks are the latest trend now, and HP isn’t being left out of that race. The HP Pavilion dv5z is the latest addition to its line of 15” notebooks, and the company was just in time to catch the back-to-school shopping spree in 2008. The HP Pavilion dv5z is equipped with a 2.1 GHz dual- core AMD Turion X2 processor, and an ATI Radeon HD3200 graphics card to deliver a stunning graphical experience to match its performance. The only thing that feels out of place is the price.

The Pavilion dv5z comes factory equipped with a 15.4” Widescreen HD WSXGA+ display running at 1680×1050, which enhances the power of the Radeon to give you one of the best onboard graphics ever on a laptop. You get 2 GB ram, but can opt for up to 4 GB, like with the Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion DV5 model. It’s equipped with a 160 GB SATA hard disk running at 5400 rpm, and a dual layered DVD writer. It is Wi- Fi capable with 802.11 b/n networks.

The dv5z features HP’s new “Mesh” imprint finish, and the notebook is smooth around the edges, making it much easier and more comfortable to carry around. The touchpad is quite stylish with its reflective surface, which can catch fingerprints at times, but that’s acceptable.

With the notebook being this intensive in terms of graphics and performance, one can’t expect much with the battery life. The HP dv5z gives an average battery life at full charge of about 2 and half hours. This isn’t much and HP could have done better, but performance and visuals make up for that loss. Overall the HP Pavilion dv5z is a great notebook for shoppers.

Toshiba Satellite A305-S6864: The all new uncompromising Budget Laptop

By Alexis • Oct 31st, 2008 • Category: Laptops

If you are looking for a budget laptop, without compromising on style and performance, then the Toshiba Satellite A305-S6864 is one of the best mobile computing devices you could opt for.

It’s an appealing laptop with a high-gloss finish, right from the screen cover to the entire keyboard area. The edges are not sharp; rather this unit has smooth rounded corners which make it comfortable to hold in your hands. Another unique feature of this device is its powerful built-in speakers. The other hardware installations are also very impressive. There is one speedy 2.26-GHz Core 2 Duo P8400 processor backed up by a formidable 4GB of RAM. Running heavy applications on this laptop is, therefore, obviously not an issue. To put it into perspective, the Sony VGN-FW21Z offers a similar performance, but for a far higher price. The A305 also has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 256MB graphics card, which makes it an ideal device for playing new generation 3D games. This is not the best gaming laptop in the market, but if matched with its price then it certainly is up there. Performance wise this machine stands close to the Sony’s VAIO VGN-SZ791N which is very costly.

The connectivity options are also more than satisfactory. It offers a 10/100 ethernet LAN, WiFi 802.11b/g/n, eSATA, i-Link Firewire, ExpressCard and three USB 2.0 ports. The storage is provided via 320GB, 5400rpm hard disk drive. The only grey area this laptop possesses is it does not have backlit keyboard, which makes it almost impossible to work in dark areas. Oh! In case you are wondering, the display is fine as well with a 15.4-inch screen.
