By James • Nov 3rd, 2008 • Category: Laptops

Asus is going to add a new 10 inch netbook to its Eee PC line named 1002HA netbook. This one is an upgraded or restyled version of the Asus 1001HA, which was leader in its time.

Like most hi-end Asus netbooks, the 1002HA is also expected to have a captivating configuration and enough juice to handle resource hungry tasks. It will come with a 1.6 GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and a hefty 160GB hard drive. The design will be captivating too. The design of 1002HA is same as the existing Asus Eee PC S101. This netbook will have a curved and pseudo-brushed metal external shell, front mounted speakers and more compact shape. The two cell battery (instead of the six cell batteries used in other Asus ultra portable computers) assures that the users don’t face any problem while carrying the device around due to the reduced weight.

Some other important features include Wi-Fi connectivity, USB ports and a built-in card reader. The company hasn’t reveled too much about this gadget, but as far as the performance is concerned, it will be an ideal computing device to have. It is believed that the 1002HA netbook will come with an attached price tag of €449, which is equivalent to around £360.

Will Smartphones eventually replace Personal Computers?

By Alexis • Oct 31st, 2008 • Category: Uncategorized

Nowadays smartphones are really getting smart enough to perform a large number of computing tasks. Smartphones like the Apple iPhone 3G, T-Mobile G1, Blackberry Bold, HTC Touch, HP Data/ Voice messenger, E-Ten phones and many more, are capable of high speed internet surfing and executing web based tasks. With such a scenario, analysts are speculating that relatively soon consumers will prefer smartphones over their personal computers.

This is naturally because smartphones are far more portable when it comes to internet usage. The mobile world is just offering more sophisticated phones day by day, which promise to fulfill the needs of the next generation of computing enthusiasts. According to a survey, the amount of mobile internet connections will incredibly grow up to 5.8 billion till 2013. Practically every smartphone released today, like the HTC Touch Pro Raphael, for example, offer a whole host of features that rival small laptops. Mobile manufacturers and wireless carriers are continually upgrading their offerings, which results in the evolution of super phones that support instant messaging, social networking, newsreaders, office applications and much more.

According to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, “You know, one of our entrants into that category, if you will, is the iPhone. For browsing the Internet and doing e-mail and all the other things that a netbook lets you do. And being connected via the cellular network wherever you are, an iPhone is a pretty good solution for that, and it fits in your pocket.”

Greg Sterling, founding principal of Sterling Market Intelligence said, “The usage that iPhones have already had clearly validates the idea that smartphones will expand into PC territory. Opera confirmed to me over the phone that in places like India they’re seeing more usage from their mobile browsers than on the desktop.”

An Innovative Device from iMovio: iKit

By Dean • Oct 27th, 2008 • Category: PDA News

If you have been looking for a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), with high-end features, then here is the perfect device for you. The iKit introduced by iMovio is an amalgamation of a smartphone and a mini-PC. You can also call it a pocket mobile companion that is as handy as a mobile phone. At first glance, you might not notice all the sophisticated features of this small, WiFi enabled handheld.

The iKit possesses compact dimensions of 95mm x 65 mm x 15.5mm. It includes a full QWERTY keyboard and a 2.8 QVGA display along with an 8GB SD card slot. While the gadget is as good as a decent smartphone, the USB port makes it a reasonable alternative to a laptop or, at least a netbook like the Asus Eee PC 701 4G. The trendy looking iKit is truly an affordable substitute for the expensive smartphones as well as the mini-PCs.

In fact, IMOVIO seems to create the gadget with the same idea in mind, which can be gathered from a statement of the company’s CEO, Dr. Jack Torobin. He said, “Many consumers can’t afford the latest smartphones or mini-PC gadget, while others simply can’t use or just don’t like the existing form factors…..” Dr Torobin further stated that many users, particularly women and adolescents are likely to be more interested in the stylish iKit.

The portable iKit is capable of fulfilling all modern communication needs along with the benefits of a clamshell design and a landscape screen.

A New Venture by ARM: Cortex Netbooks

By Dean • Oct 27th, 2008 • Category: Laptops

ARM, a British processor design company is recognized for its preeminence in the smartphone market. After marking its presence in the manufacture of smartphones, as well as the iPhone, the company is now ready to launch a netbook capable processor. The novel product is expected to offer competition to Intel’s Atom.

Speaking about the company’s latest move, Rob Coombs, director of ARM’s mobile solutions said,” In the future, we’re going to be in Netbooks…..Expect announcements in the next few months”. This step is quite surprising as ARM is more of a small devices company. However, only performance can reveal the capability of ARM’s netbooks, which are expected to run on Linux.

As conveyed by Coombs, we can expect to experience the new Cortex-A8 in netbooks along with smartphones. The first smartphones based on A8 will probably hit the market next year but we will have to wait till 2010 to see A9 in action. The multi-core A9 is in a direct competition with the approaching dual core Atom. Currently the Atom is found in nearly every netbook on the market, including the ultra successful Asus Eee PC 901 20G Linux model. The rivalry becomes even tougher with Intel’s recent announcement on the companies intentions to introduce Atom chips into smartphones. Will both the innovators benefit by entering into each-other’s shoes?

Well! It is just a matter of some more time and the product will be ready for an acid test

Asus Eee PC S101: More Notebook than Netbook

By Dean • Oct 21st, 2008 • Category: Laptops

As a now familiar name in the world of computers, the Eee PC is a name that has been making headlines and waves in the laptop world for over a year. Asus’ latest addition to the ultra successful series actually bares more resemblance to the Asus U6V ultraportable, than other Eee PCs. In fact, it not only shares more in common with Asus’ notebook line in terms of appearance, as many of the Eee PC S101 are more reminiscent of a fully sized laptop, rather than an Eee PC.

If you dislike the battery location of Eee PCs, then you will have no issues with the S101 Netbook as its battery in the form of a 4-cell pack is concealed on the bottom. Along with being adequately placed, the battery has an amazing life. It lasts for 526 minutes, which is perfect for supporting your day-to-day work. The slim look of the device is the main selling point behind a netbook, and with a mere weight of 1.1 kg and a thickness of 25mm, the Eee PC S101 excels on this front, though less so than other Eee PCs. Although most users can go with the cell battery, it is possible to enhance the life with the Asus Super Hybrid Engine that has four levels. However, the Auto-saving mode must be used for a limited period as it is connected to the CPU’s functioning.

The glossy finish of the Eee PC’s lid, along with the metallic palm rests, promotes a concrete feel. This impressive build is not only good-looking but also very solid and properly grips the screen to keep it in place. The standard 10.2 inches panel offers a remarkable screen resolution and it is a pleasure to work with the keypad of this tech-smart model.
