Dell Adamo discontinued

The Dell Adamo laptop ‘range’ that never really became a range has been discontinued. The sleek aluminium computer, which was made to compete with Apple’s Macbook Air, has gone the way of the Dodo.

Bye, bye

CNET describes the Dell Adamo as a once ‘worthy competitor to Apple’s groundbreaking laptop. Like the Air, it had an aluminum casing, was eye-catchingly thin (at 0.65 inches), used solid-state drives long before they came into wider use, and packed ultra-power-efficient Intel Core 2 Duo processors. But the Adamo, like the earlier MacBook Air models, was pricey, starting at around $2,000, when it was launched in March 2009.’

Though the Dell Adamo would later see heavy discount after heavy discount, adoption didn’t increase at a fast enough rate, forcing the company to discontinue the computer. All the while, Apple forged ahead with its Macbook Air, releasing a model in 2010 that had very positive responses in the consumer tech space.

Unable to compete with Apple on pricing

Daring Fireball’s John Gruber makes a very interesting observation, saying ‘Did you ever think you’d live to see the day when Dell couldn’t compete with Apple on PC pricing?’ It’s actually an astute observation for modern day Apple, where with its iPhone unsubsidized and even its iPad, the company’s products are often priced equal to, or cheaper than competitors’.

This unintuitive reality for Apple is due to the company being the biggest purchaser of flash memory in the world, used in smartphones, mp3 players and tablet PCs, allowing them to get preferential pricing for the goods.

It’s all bad for Dell

For the Dell Adamo, and Dell in general, the failure of this product is not encouraging. Where Dell was once the number one volume shipper of PCs in the world, the company has slid, being overtaken by HP and Acer, respectively, with Lenovo running close on their heels, too. Perhaps the death of the Adamo signals a refocusing of product strategy, so Dell can return to the top of the PC mound. Perhaps.

Dell laptops

Dell laptops follow the same design motif that Dell’s desktop line does by splitting the laptops into specific lines. The primary laptops found within Dell laptops include the Dell Inspiron, the Dell Studio series, with the beefy Dell XPS laptops being the most powerful of the bunch.

The Inspiron line

Within the Inspiron line, the mid-level Dell Inspiron N5010 has long been a top seller for the computer manufacturer and with good reason. At under £600 it’s priced below its inspired performance, sporting an Intel Core i5 430M configuration, clocking at 2.26GHz and 4GB RAM out of the gate.

The Studio Line

The Dell Studio line has long been considered superior in both build and capabilities when compared to the Dell Inspiron line, but recent additions in both categories have blurred the lines a little. The fairly expensive but very capable Dell Studio 1558 is a must have if price isn’t a factor, sporting a 15.6-inch display, an Intel Core i7 processor clocking in at 1,600GHz. If price is a factor, however, scaling back to the ever popular (but dated) Dell Studio 15 series is a viable option.

Dell XPS Line

Dell doesn’t have too many variations of its XPS lineup unlike it does for the two ranges above. As such the company has historically able to focus all its resources into marketing one or two very powerful notebooks within this product category. Within the UK the quite uninspiring Dell Studio XPS 16 is the current beefy laptop the US manufacturer is punting. Almost as if Dell isn’t paying much attention to this notebook series in the UK, the recently updated laptop sports an Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 processor running at 2.2GHz with a paltry 2GB ram at a bloated £699. Steer clear. Unless you plan on going all the way up to the Intel Core i7-820QM configuration which, honestly, is priced too steeply, too.

Ubiquity equals accountability

The advantage products from companies like Dell offer is the vast support behind the sales. With a large network, you know that if you have any problems with your laptop, you can have it very quickly ironed out. Assuming that there is sufficient reason coupled with your liking Dell’s general aesthetics, you won’t go wrong with these laptops.

Fire Hazards: Sony Laptop Batteries Recalled

By James • Nov 3rd, 2008 • Category: Mobile Computer News

Sony laptop batteries are being recalled by the mobile computing giants such as HP, DELL and Toshiba on account of fire hazards. Around 100,000 laptop batteries are found to be affected. The main issue is that these batteries get overheated quickly resulting in chances that they may catch on fire and burst due to intense heat. If this happens, then apart from the damage caused to the laptop, the users could potentially be seriously burned as well.

Companies like HP, DELL and Toshiba have already issued recalls for Sony batteries that were used in their laptops. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has asked consumers not to use the recalled products anymore. The affected batteries were manufactured between October 2004 and June 2005. Till date there have been 40 incidents of battery overheating reported globally.

According to Sony, the main reason behind battery malfunction is manufacturing line adjustments and a flaw in raw material. Around 35000 batteries out of 100000 were used in the laptops that were shipped in the US. Batteries that have a barcode label beginning with A0, L0, L1 or GC and that were used in HP Pavilion dv1000, dv8000 and zd8000, Compaq Presario v2000 and v2400 machines, HP Compaq nc6110, nc6120, nc6140, nc6220, nc6230,nx4800, nx4820, nx6110, nx6120 and nx9600 computers, Toshiba Satellite A70/A75, P30/P5, M30X/M35X and M50/M55 laptops and Tecra A3, A5 and S2 computers, Dell Latitude 110L and Inspiron 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150 and 5160 laptops. Fortunately, users of newer models made within the last 2 years, such as the Toshiba Tecra A10-112, are unaffected. However, if you have those machines that have recalled batteries installed then immediately contact your PC vendor and ask for a replacement.
