Asus all but introduced the netbook market with its Asus Eee PCs, and the Asus Eee PC 1008P-KR looks to continue that innovation. How does it fare?
Looks the business
This 10-inch top of the range Eee PC has its processing done by an Intel Atom N450. Its coffee brown (or hot pink) finish looks great and the build quality feels notably sturdy, especially for a netbook.
Specs
In terms of specifications, the display is 10.1 inches, with a resolution of 1024×768. It comes packed in with 1GB DDR2 RAM, a 250GB SATA hard drive and an additional 500GB Eee space. 32-bit Windows 7 powers the Asus Eee PC 1008P-KR, with Intel GMA 3150 graphics, and a multitouch trackpad. It also has a built-in webcam and boasts eight hours of battery life (from the two batteries it comes packed in with).
It’s also expectedly tiny, weighing a mere 1.15kg, with its dimensions of 260 x 180 x 18mm.
Heavy lifting

The litmus test for a netbook in a now mature market is how well it handles heavy lifting. The initial wow associated with the tiny form factor has all but died out in this very saturated market, so what the Asus Eee PC 1008P-KR can do and how it goes about doing it is more important than how it looks.
Keyboard and trackpad
The keyboard on this Asus Eee PC is fantastic. It fills the width of the computer, for maximum space, so as to reduce the cramping that accompanies protracted netbook typing. The spacing between keys is also very well thought out, and will, hopefully, reduce typing errors.
The trackpad isn’t separate from the palm rest through a border, but rather rests flush with it and is visible through small dots surrounding the trackpad. The multi-touch functionality works well and the matte finish gives the trackpad just the right amount of resistance, making for a pleasant experience. The single chrome button looks great, too, but is a peculiar choice in design since it’s a magnet for prints.
Performance
This is where the Asus Eee PC doesn’t push the bar. The 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 isn’t a major speed boost over previous models, outside of reducing power consumption. Even though this bodes well for run times, this netbook will do little to convince the crowd who believe netbooks are not good at anything that this sub-genre of laptops should be taken seriously. Online benchmarks indicate that this Asus netbook is up there with the most powerful netbooks released so far, though it doesn’t scratch the capabilities most contemporary entry-level laptops have. It’s in the same caliber as the acclaimed Samsung N210.
More of the same
So, in essence, the Asus Eee PC 1008P-KR took the netbook formula and refined it. The aesthetics are fantastic, and it’s wonderfully designed but in terms of capabilities, it isn’t at all genre bending.
