OLPC Project Laptops – A Reality

By James • Aug 19th, 2008 • Category: Industry News, Laptops

The OLPC project, which was originally founded, by Nicholas Negroponte and a few other veterans is today a statement of commitment from a host of business people, academicians, artists, etc. A network of volunteers and sponsors are putting in a lot of passion and effort to make this project a huge success.

The project was initiated with an aim to provide an opportunity for even the poorest of children in the developing countries to possess a laptop of their own. A rugged and basic laptop for this purpose was devised which was cost effective and yet provided useful assistance for the children to empower themselves (similar to what has turned out to be the Asus EEE PC 900).

Making learning fun and proactive for the poorest of child around the world, the OLPC project laptop interface was created with a lot of care and attention to detail with the help of expert teams from Red Hat and Pentagram. The initial version of the OLPC Project Laptop came with Liquid Crystal on silicon projector. This went on to develop in to a display, which was dual mode. The conventional LED color mode was one option and a black and white mode, which can be read clearly in the sunlight, was another. This option in fact was more adaptable for the developing countries, which hold a lot of outdoor classes.

As the next stage of development, the OLPC Project Laptop was fitted with a transformer hinge. This facilitated flexible usage including a laptop, e book reader and a gaming device. This laptop was finalized in the year 2006 and the first edition of the Generation-One XO was ready to roll out.
