By Jenny • Mar 17th, 2009 • Category: Uncategorized

Sony Ericsson has recently announced its new smartphone called Idou. This one is more like a converged device because it combines the power of a CyberShot camera with the functionality of a smartphone. The most amazing feature of the Idou is its 12 megapixel auto focus camera that can give you stunning images at an unprecedented resolution of 4000 x 3000 pixels. Apart from being the first smartphone with 12MP camera the Idou is the first one to run on the brand new open source Symbian user interface that is still in its development phase at the Symbian Foundation. The Sony-Ericsson Idou is not the actual name of the phone. It is the code name of the device and is still being developed by Sony Ericsson. According to the company the Idou will be finalised by the second half of 2009 and will hit the consumer market that time only. The Sony-Ericsson Idou is expected to offer unique user interface with all the necessary functions built into it. Below are the main tech specs of the Idou:

Pixl8r and Social Media Portal from Ericsson for Mobile Network Operators

By Wilson • Feb 17th, 2009 • Category: Uncategorized

Ericsson has recently launched a new and innovative social networking portfolio for mobile network operators that will offer easy sharing of user generated data content across different networks. There are two main services that contribute to this innovative social networking platform, namely, Pixl8r and the Social Media Portal.

The Pixl8r is developed to bolster the functionality of photo sharing portals like Flickr. It’s an open standard solution that will allow photo sharing in real time. Now the subscribers can easily share social media across different web sites. They will also receive SMS notification regarding their friend’s activities irrespective of the network. The Pixl8r compatible service will be delivered via Social Media Portal. The Social Media Portal easily connects the user to the social web using any mobile phone, even non-Sony-Ericsson phones like the Samsung SGH-480 Tocco. The best thing is that it does not require any download on the client side and thus it’s easy to use and encourages posting of user generated content in diverse online communities. If the portal offers services like personal storage, unified messaging or synchronisation then all the data is automatically backed up. The Social Media Portal paired with Pixl8r offer the operators all the tools that are required to become a part of the social web.

“The social web is a dynamic, continuously evolving ecosystem that offers exciting new revenue opportunities for operators. Ericsson can deliver the tools to allow community services to be delivered under operator brands that work together with the leading web communities,” says Laurence McDonald, Vice President, Consumer and Business Applications, Ericsson.

Ericsson Looking Forward to Common APIs for Smartphones

By Dean • Dec 16th, 2008 • Category: Uncategorized

One can find numerous smartphones of different companies in the market nowadays running on different operating systems. Every smartphone has its own features and supports applications according to its operating system, like Symbian or Windows Mobile. This however creates a problem at some point of time because of the lack of cross-compatibility. The application programming interfaces (APIs) developed for one smartphone may not be suitable for some other smartphone.

To address such issues Ericsson wants to develop a common platform for the development of Application Programming Interfaces or APIs. The company is eager to help in defining a common set of APIs so that a number of programmes and services can be used on different smartphones, like using applications from the Symbian run Nokia N96 on a BlackBerry RIM OS. Ericsson wants to improve the global communication services and aims to bring Internet speed to mobile phones and provide Internet companies with access to open mobile APIs and create mash ups.

This is, however, still only a concept and is not materialised or implemented in any manner. It may take several more years to launch such a common API, but once developed, it will have a substantial impact on the smartphone industry. The smartphone makers will be able to develop in-depth relationships with all of the major mobile operators and yes the smartphone users will also get advantage of that.

Intel and Ericsson Now Offering SMS based Laptop Security

By Alexis • Dec 15th, 2008 • Category: Laptops

Like other major IT companies, Intel and Ericsson have also decided to take a step towards securing the data on a stolen or missing laptop. The two IT giants have joined hands to implement the SMS based data theft protection. Ericsson will now be integrating Intel’s Anti-Theft PC Protection technology into its mobile broadband modules, which will enable the IT department to lock a missing or stolen laptop remotely just by sending a text-message to the laptop. A few days back Lenovo and Phoenix Technologies have also implemented a similar type of SMS based data protection.

When the laptop owner or the IT department sends the text message to a notebook or laptop it will be received via mobile broadband module and will be transferred to Intel’s Anti-Theft PC Protection Technology. While hard drives or USB sticks, like the Verbatim 47338 Business Secure device, have long had extensive security counter measures, the same cannot necessarily be said for laptops. Fortunately this new technology plans to change that. After sending the text message, the technology will automatically send a ‘Poison Pill’ to disable the PC and once the laptop again gets into the hands of the authorized person the IT department can enable it using a special password. However, this whole security plan has certain limitations. If the laptop’s OS is disabled or if it’s been shut down then it is necessary that the machine is connected to an AC power outlet to use Intel’s technology. If the laptop is running on the battery then it must be ‘Awake’ and connected to a LAN/WAN so that the ‘Poison Pill’ can be delivered.

To overcome these limitations the IT department can set some security policy which will initiate the Intel technology if there are repeated log-on failures or if the laptop has been taken off from the corporate networks or central servers for a prolonged period.
