Toshiba unveil 3D Sandy Bridge laptop

Toshiba has long been at the forefront of 3D technology, vowing to aggressively pursue glasses-free 3D TV while it continues to improve on its offering. Sticking to the three-dimensional theme, the company has also unveiled a beastly Toshiba 3D gaming laptop at CES 2011, called the Toshiba Qosmio X500.

What’s in the box

Gaming laptops always have impressive specs, but Toshiba’s 3D gaming laptop takes this further. The Toshiba Qosmio X500 gaming laptop features the fresh off the factory floor Intel Core i7 second generation – what is now generally known as the Intel Sandy Bridge chipset. As if that’s not bleeding edge of technology enough for you, it also ships with Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity and USB 3.0.

3D the major draw

However, if CES 2011 is any indication, the company hopes that the main selling point of the Toshiba Qosmio X500 is its built-in 3D support. When accompanied with the ubiquitous Nvidia 3D Vision technology, you get to game – and watch films – in stereoscopic 3D.

In addition to being able to experience the 3D directly on the Toshiba gaming laptop, the company has allowed for transmittal of the three-dimensional image over HDMI onto your 3D TV, so you can see the effect there. In many ways, this works much like how a 3D Blu-ray player or a 3D console like the PS3 works, so the tech is not brand new, strictly speaking, but it is a very nice inclusion, nevertheless.

CES 2011 continues

If you’re having trouble keeping up with the countless announcements coming out of CES 2011, you’re not alone. For a tech lover, this is like a child being locked in a candy store – lost in the euphoria of lots of sweet stuff, you’ll inevitably consume too much and get ill. But what fun is thinking away the hangover before it’s given a chance to actually set in?

The gaming PC: a guide

By Wilson • Jun 16th, 2010 • Category: Mobile Computer News
Modern Warfare 2

Laptops have been on par with PCs for some time now in terms of annual sales, and it stands to reason that at some point they will begin to accelerate away from desktop PCs. As such, components makers have had to adjust their strategies while users have adjusted their demands. This has held true for makers of gaming hardware as many gamers have begun looking to mobile solutions to get their fix.

However, if you want the optimum performance and the bleeding edge of technology, especially for gaming, desktops are superior to laptops. This is fact. And it may stay this way for some time. Now that that’s out the way, let’s see what pre-assembled gaming PCs are available for those who don’t want to get their hands dirty assembling the units themselves.

Alienware

Alienware, which now belongs to computing giant Dell, has long been the pre-assembled gaming PC forerunner. Their pre-assembled units have always been pricey, though the comparable cost has dropped in recent years. If you don’t mind dropping a pretty dime, you can get the Alienware Area 51 LUX for a little under £2,900. This is an extravagant price tag for an extravagant gaming PC powered by an Intel Core i7-920M running at 3,2GHz standard. Add to that 6,144MB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM for added boost. The price tag is, however, escalated by the 2 X ATI Radeon HD 5970 graphics card that has 2048MB of onboard memory. These cards on their own cost north of £500, giving Alienware a bit of crutch in justifying that price tag. Not much, but a bit.

Zoostroom

The lesser-known Zoostorm range of gaming PCs are also up for consideration, especially if price is a factor. The fairly recently released Zoostorm 7871 gaming PC is significantly less expensive than the Alienware Area 51 LUX, yet delivers sufficient performance for most gaming needs. With Intel Core i7 860 and its 8GB of DDR3 RAM with an Nvidia GeForce 275 GTX pushing out the graphics, Zoostorm are quite smart in cutting corners where it cannot compete with the Alienware Area 51 LUX (or Alienware in general) in terms of price.

Gaming Laptops from MSI: Heavy Duty GX630 and GT735

By Wilson • Oct 23rd, 2008 • Category: Laptops

Being different from the crowd is a daring act, but it is often the base for some really great ideas. MSI’s new decision to launch two gaming laptops, in an era when most producers are struggling to outshine the netbook, is definitely an innovative step.

The GX360 and the GT735 are the two machines made by MSI that feature an AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual Core Mobile Processor. The models differ in terms of their LCD screen dimensions. The GT735 has a 17 inch wide screen, whereas the GX360 features a smaller, 15.4 inch display.

Other variations are also clearly marked: the GX630 offers 4GB of RAM, dual speakers and a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics. Obviously this high-end graphics card is the most impressive feature that distinguishes this model from its predecessor, the MSI Megabook GX600-084.  On the other hand, the GT735 has 4 speakers along with a HD audio woofer and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3850. However, the 4 GB of memory and 320 GB of SATA HDD are common in both machines. Moreover, the two machines also share some other characteristics in common, including a card reader, USB ports, a Wi Fi and Bluetooth.

As such, a consumer is presented with an amazing choice, whereby he can buy a notebook that can better entertain his requirements. The best part of launching two different models simultaneously is the option of comparing their performance. The GT735 costs $1,049.99 (around £650) and the GX360 is available for $1,249.99 (around £770), which is not a huge difference. So the consumers are likely to judge the gaming notebooks by the appeal and not the price difference as it is too petty to influence an opinion.
