Lawsuit to halt iPhone HD production?

This story gets filed in the folder reserved for ‘highly unlikely’ events. Now that that is out the way, according to TechRadar, it appears a US judge may have the power to halt the release of the next iPhone, iPhone HD. Crazy, right? What is even more bizarre is how he would block it.

It’s not Apple, it’s LG

Long story short, LG, who are rumoured to be providing the OLED screens found in the fourth generation iPhone, widely expected as the iPhone HD, brought a case against a rival OLED manufacturer.

LG claimed that AU Optronics, a rival firm that manufactures screens, are illegally using LG technology in its devices. The claim apparently ‘backfired’ with a judge in the US ruling LG was infringing on technology rightfully owned by AU Optronics. Messy right?

What’s even messier is AU Optronics might be allowed to block the release of all devices that have LG’s OLED screens, implying a shut down of iPhone HD sales in North America.

Okay, the fine print

Relax. The first thing that needs to happen for your iPhone HD’s sales to be potentially blocked is that the iPhone’s screen must indeed be manufactured by LG. Assuming that is the case, AUO must push for the injunction, and a court must accept the injunction. Each step has a high possibility, but it stands to reason that if Apple were at risk, they would throw significant legal resources to either fight this case or make it go away completely. There is simply too much at stake.

Again, this is as much a rumour, as it is hearsay, as it is speculative. But if there’s a chance, just a chance, that it is true then it cannot be ignored.

LG Agreed to Use MS Windows Mobile Operating System on 50 Phones

By Jenny • Feb 18th, 2009 • Category: Uncategorized

South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics has recently agreed to use the Microsoft’s new Windows Mobile operating system on 50 of its models. This will bolster Microsoft’s goal of getting a bigger mobile phone market share. Microsoft dominates the PC world with its software, but the company fails to earn number one position in the mobile phone business. It stands at third position and is unable to beat Nokia’s Symbian and Research In Motion (the BlackBerry maker).

By integrating with LG, MS feels confident about its plans to extend the Windows brand to smartphones despite the fact that the LG is relatively small player in the smartphone market, with only a few notable models like the LG KF900 Prada II. Microsoft has also announced the release of its next version of Windows Mobile operating system named Windows Mobile 6.5. The company claims that this one addresses all the issues that were prevalent in previous Windows Mobile OSes. The version 6.5 will feature more user friendly interface. The drop down menus has been replaced with icons so that the user can access all the features instantly without searching for the in menus or sub-menus. However, the Windows Mobile 6.5 still lacks the multi-touch feature, which is now preferred by majority of the mobile phone users.

To bolster its mobile business profits Microsoft will be offering a free service along with the Windows Mobile service. The free service will offer the users backup services for mobile data. Users will be able to backup and store personal information, contact lists and photos onto Microsoft servers.

Longer Lasting Batteries: LG Brings Solar Displays to Notebooks

By Alexis • Dec 24th, 2008 • Category: Laptops

LG has moved up another step on the innovation ladder by launching new notebooks with solar displays. The main issue with almost all of the notebook users throughout the globe is that their machines run short of battery juice after few working only a few hours. It’s really frustrating when the notebooks get low on power especially when you are about to do some urgent task and don’t have the AC adapter with you.

To resolve this issue, LG has come up with a brilliant idea and launched sunlight-powered displays for the portable computing devices. These displays will offer users some huge advantages. First, it will lower the battery power consumption to a great extent. Because of this users automatically get extended work hours to do their business on the go. The new displays can be switched to the solar energy mode to conserve the battery charge and when used in the solar mode the displays use the sunlight for illumination rather than getting backlit via the battery. However, it’s obvious that for this you need to work outside under direct sunlight. Test results showed that running the display on solar energy brings down the battery power consumption to one fourth.

According to LG, the backlit displays account up to 75 percent of the total power consumption. Now you can easily imagine the amount of boost that battery will get while running the display on sunlight. This makes carrying around a spare laptop battery, like the LG XBA06LG0-W20, completely unnecessary. The solar display offers 14.1 inches of viewable screen and is optimised for viewing under direct sunlight.

LG Reveals 60 Mbps Smartphone Chip

By Jenny • Dec 12th, 2008 • Category: Uncategorized

LG Electronics has come up with a new modem chip for smartphones which will boost the data upload as well as download rate via mobile web surfing. The new chip is based on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, which is in fact the main contender for the next generation mobile broadband.

The LTE technology is still being established and theoretically it is supposed to deliver an incredible 100 Mbps download speed. The chip that is designed by LG offers a download speed of 60 Mbps and can upload the data at a rate of 20 Mbps, which is far better than the current data transfer speed of 7.6 Mbps offered by most smartphones. The new LG chip, which we can expect to hopefully find in LG mobile phones sometime soon, will broaden the horizons of consumers who will have new mobile surfing possibilities. Because of the high speed connection they will be able to do more and explore new horizons that are not practically possible with the current chips. For example consumers will experience amazingly high speed mobile web browsing and be able to watch high definition videos on the go without encountering the annoying buffering process.

The LTE technology will soon become the driving force behind the next generation technology. Besides LG, many other companies including AT&T and Vodafone are using it as a base of their 4G networks that are to be launched after few years.
