Nokia Officially Acquires Symbian and will absorb all Employees by next Year

By Alexis • Dec 5th, 2008 • Category: Industry News

Besides the launch of its new smartphone N97, which according to Nokia is the most advanced smartphone till now, the company has made another important and strategic move. Recently this mobile manufacturer has acquired the world’s biggest smartphone operating system company called Symbian.

Nokia has been in collaboration with  Symbian for a long time. It uses the Symbian Operating System in its all smartphones, including the Nokia E61, as well. Now the company has formally acquired the remaining Symbian partners too. Nokia took this step with an aim to release the Symbian Operating System under an open-source license. This is a challenge to Google’s smartphone operating system, Android. Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, the CEO of Nokia said, “The company wants to create the most attractive platform for mobile innovation and drive the development of new and compelling web-enabled applications.”

All the major stakeholders of Symbian including Sony Ericsson, Panasonic and Siemens have accepted the offer. Samsung Electronics, however, has not said anything regarding the acquisition, but Nokia is expecting a positive response. Nokia has planned to form the Symbian foundation with the companies that have intent of creating a royalty free open source operating system. Such companies include AT&T, Texas Instruments, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and some others. All the Symbian employees will be a part of the Nokia’s staff on 1st Feb, 2009.

Panasonic ToughBook CF-U1 Rugged UMPC

By James • Aug 22nd, 2008 • Category: Laptops

Panasonic is proud to be the innovator of the first Mobile Internet Device Ultra Mobile PC. Based on the Atom platform this product was a surprise announcement from Panasonic. In fact, this UMPC is the first one to be launched with the new chip from Intel.

What more? This amazing ToughBook actually lives up to the rugged heritage of this company. This CF-U1 is as rugged and is rated along with categories like CF-30 and CF-19 notebooks. This amazing Toughbook comes with a drive, which is solid and even more robust than the standard Winchester Drive.

The solid drive eliminates chances of mechanical failure of any kind thereby making this ToughBook extremely durable and long lasting. While the drive has a 16 GB capacity, there is an option of a 32GB disk.

There is also a chance of the availability of increased capacity in the near future considering the fact that other notebooks which are ultra portable offer even 128 GB SSDs’. However it makes sense to keep the drive space limited as field workers who under normal circumstances only use them for a particular task. This effectively eliminates the need for a lot of drive space.

Panasonic is one of the pioneers in the field of computers and if you are a ToughBook user you can expect excellent back up support from their team of technicians. The Panasonic ToughBook CF-U1 Rugged UMPC is ideal for those who are looking to work with a notebook for something specific.
