Toshiba Portégé M750: Stylish and Practical Touch Screen Tablet PC

By Wilson • Feb 11th, 2009 • Category: Mobile Computer News

Touch screen computing devices have become a norm these days rather than being a symbol of prestige and style. Everyone prefers touch screen devices. Be it mobiles, smartphones, laptops, tablets, netbooks or any other portable computing gadget, in each segment you can easily find a variety of touch screen models.

The Portégé M750 from Toshiba is also a high tech convertible tablet that sports a touch screen interface and other exciting features. The Toshiba Portégé was announced in October last year and now being used by various corporate professionals. It equips an Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 CPU running at 2.4GHz along with a 2GB RAM. Performance wise it’s a reasonable choice but if you are hard core 3D gamer then the Portégé M750 won’t entertain you much because of the absence of the dedicated 3D graphics card. But that doesn’t mean that the display quality is poor. Its 12.1 inch display renders quality pixels and is ideal for watching movies and playing some basic level games at high resolution. Coming to the ergonomics, the Toshiba Portégé M750 has got a highly impressive keyboard with a magnesium alloy shell that makes it spill and duct resistant hardware. Apart from this the device also sports dual-mode digitizer that allows the users to work with stylus as well as with fingers.

But M750 has its own limitations. Due to the attached convertible hinge the device gains unwanted bulk and weight. Therefore, despite being a portable computing device the Portégé M750 won’t give your shoulder or back stress free company.

Toshiba breaks out with the largest ever SSD included in a Laptop

By Alexis • Jun 18th, 2008 • Category: Laptops

Solid State Disk (SSD) technology is quickly catching on and replacing standard hard disk technology in laptops with its improved speed, faster latency and overall better performance. In fact, SSD drives are also lighter than similarly sized standard hard drives, consume less power and their lack of moving parts also entails minimum noise output. Despite all these substantial advantages over standard hard drive technology, there remain two obstacles facing SSD; namely, the higher price and far lower storage capacity. Of course these difficulties are slowly being overcome and Toshiba’s new Portégé R500-12 with its 128 GB SSD shows exactly how the problem of disk space is being addressed and slowly solved. The Portégé’s SSD drive offers all the principal benefits of SSD technology, but without the restrictions of minimum disk space and represents the largest use of SSD in a laptop to date. Toshiba, who are known for their all around quality laptops, did not disappoint or cutback on the laptop’s other equally impressive specifications either.

The R500-12 weighs in at just two pounds, but comes with a sizable 12.1 inch screen for viewing enjoyment. The included 1.33 GHz Core 2 Duo U7700 processor runs the device with the help of 2 GB of integrated DDR RAM. Moreover, Toshiba’s laptop comes equipped with a DVD super multi-drive for entertainment, an Ethernet connection, WLAN, and Bluetooth capability for communication and a GMA950 graphics set. As already mentioned, one of the SSD’s greatest strengths is the lower power consumption, and here it has the effect of extending the Portégé’s battery life to around 8 hours. The SSD isn’t the only secure part of the device, as the Portégé also comes with a fingerprint reader, advanced encryption and multiple levels of passwords for enhanced protection. Now while the SSD slowly is overcoming its one size drawback, its pricing drawback apparently remains, as Toshiba is requesting around £1,499 for their record setting laptop.
