Windows 8 arriving in 2012, confirms Ballmer

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has spoken about Windows 8 in public for the very first time. While we’ve known for months now that the software giant is deep into the production cycle of their next desktop OS, Ballmer confirmed that the software will arrive in 2012.

From Tokyo, with love

The Microsoft CEO used a developers’ conference held in Tokyo, Japan on Monday as the location to announce both the official name of and release window of the successor to the insanely popular Windows 7. He confirmed that the software would arrive next year, and is being developed with PCs and tablet PCs in mind.

The march is on, full swing

He told the devs at the conference that: ‘We’re obviously hard at work on the next version of Windows. Windows 7 PCs will sell over 350 million units this year.’ He continued, pointing out the hard work MS has done on the OS, including adding a new UI, ink, touch and speech features.

To which he added: ‘And yet, as we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there’s a whole lot more coming.’

This is where he officially pulled the cat out of the bag, saying: ‘As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8. Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors.’

Here we go

Ballmer, infamous for his passionate talks to developers, likely sees Windows 8 as a very important entry in the company’s history. Microsoft has all but missed the tablet PC revolution, and the company will no doubt look to correct this when their brand new operating system lands in 2012. Given the colossal success of Windows 7, you ignore this new entry at your peril.

Microsoft Kinect for Windows officially arriving this year

Microsoft has officially announced that Kinect will be coming to Windows PCs soon, with the company announced a spring release window for the SDK. What that means is developers will get official tools to make applications based on the motion controller system for the Windows operating system.

Microsoft blog spills the beans

The Official Microsoft Blog made the announcement, saying that Microsoft Research was developing Kinect for Windows and that interested parties can get access to the SDK soon. The blog writes: ‘It will be available this spring as a free download, and will give academic researchers and enthusiasts access to key pieces of the Kinect system – such as the audio technology, system application programming interfaces and direct control of the Kinect sensor itself.’

Beyond gaming

As exciting as the announcement is, it’s been a long time coming. So long, in fact, that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer referenced bringing the tech to PCs back when it was codenamed Project Natal, prior to Kinect’s official launch.

Apparently Microsoft Kinect for Windows, and the possible solutions excites the team over at Microsoft, and they argue that this could revolutionize the way in which people interact with tech. The blog reads: ‘The possibilities are endless. Natural and intuitive technologies such as Kinect can be more than just a great platform for gaming and entertainment.’

Speaking further on the possibilities this new form of technological interaction brings, the post reads: ‘They open up enormous opportunities across a wide variety of scenarios, including addressing societal issues in areas such as healthcare and education.’

We knew this was coming, though, right?

After the hacker scene made Microsoft Kinect, meant exclusively for the Xbox 360, work on Windows computers, people began to wonder about the possibilities. Interesting and quirky apps alike were developed, but Microsoft for the most part stood to the side and watched – neither admonishing nor congratulating.

If this works out well, the Microsoft Kinect team could very well have pulled off something genius in a sneaky way – using the Xbox 360 as a Trojan horse to launch a game-changing technological platform. Smart.

Does the idea of Kinect for Windows excite you?

CES 2011 confirms the end of the PC era

We’ve watched the tablet PCs, smartphones, and 3D TVs flood the show floor at CES 2011, making it, from a technological stand point, one of the most impressive Consumer Electronics Shows ever. The folks over at technology charting and analysis site Asymco have gone one further, calling it ‘the most exciting CES ever’. And not due to any particular product launches, but due to the massive shifts happening in the technological landscape.

Microsoft is at the centre of it all

The must-read Asymco article begins with the following assertion:

‘At this year’s CES two unthinkable things happened:

  1. The abandonment of Windows exclusivity by practically all of Microsoft’s OEM customers.
  2. The abandonment of Intel exclusivity by Microsoft for the next generation of Windows.’

This very astute observation is followed by further explanation, where they write: ‘Many of Microsoft’s customers chose to use an OS product from Microsoft’s arch enemy. Some chose to roll their own. Microsoft, in turn, chose to port its OS to an architecture from Intel’s arch enemy.’

The end of the PC era

This data points to what IDC – and many other tech pundits have been saying for some time now – the end of the PC era. How so? Where once Microsoft was the default and exclusive OS solution for OEMs world over, Google Android has proven it has enough momentum and ubiquity as a mobile OS solution that it should be a strategic consideration alongside Windows.

Microsoft itself is driving a stake into the once exclusive Wintel relationship by developing its operating system for ARM, Intel’s enemy, and the early forerunner in mobile processing technology. All of this happened at CES 2011, which is why it is so pivotal.

This matters because, as Asymco points out, it confirms the end of the paradigm where there was a ‘condensation of profits around two companies, Intel and Microsoft,’ with other companies, most notably Google with Android and ARM in this example, muscling in, and proving strong on the mobile front.

The revolution will be mobilized

It still early to call it, but we’re in agreement that this is, in fact, signs of the ‘end’ of the PC era. And that is a major claim for CES 2011, which from a pure products perspective is unlike anything prior.

What do you make of this assertion? Is it misguided, or is it just a sign of the times?
