Microsoft is set to reveal its latest version of Windows Mobile, that is presently being called Windows Mobile 7. This is widely regarded as Microsoft’s final chance to reclaim a stake in the smartphone operating system market that’s seen its power eroded with the emergence of two powerful operating systems – Google’s Android OS and Apple’s iPhone – as well as the collapse of another, Nokia’s Symbian. Samsung is also scheduled to release a new mobile OS called Bada with its new handset, the Samsung Wave. The Mobile World Conference will be the coming out party for the Bada platform, and developers especially are hoping it’s yet another viable platform to publish their wares.

In addition to Samsung’s Wave, many hope Microsoft will finally speak about Project Pink, its handset rumoured to be developed by Sharp. Accompanying Microsoft’s potential bomb and Samsung’s Wave will be hardware from the usual suspects as well as uncharted territory for other manufacturers. The Garmin-Asus Nuvifone, which is powered by a modified Windows Mobile 6.5, is expected to be an interesting and important move from the GPS manufacturer.
Corporate speak and technical advancements
Carriers also use the Mobile World Conference as a platform to discuss what technical advancements they’re making in the mobile space. Currently, with 4G technology and HSDPA 42mb plus talk being in the air, as well as the reemergence of Motorola’s decision to split its company in two, carriers, hardware manufacturers, shareholders, stakeholders and consumers alike have a lot to look forward to.
