The Lego Group, manufacturers of the timeless toys that get children and parents alike excited, have announced that they are releasing a Lego online game in the second half of this year. The new Lego game, Lego Universe, adds a new spin to God-mode multiplayer online gaming by allowing players to create their own universes brick by brick.
Online creativity
Director of business development for Lego, and lead for the Lego Universe project, Mark Hansen, says that Lego users are typically very creative with Lego products. He hopes that players will take this creativity online. According to Hansen, there are endless possibilities for players to use their imaginations in this, the newest entry into the multiplayer online gaming sector.
Imagination fights evil

The Lego online game is aimed at children aged eight to twelve years old, so it won’t have any of the violence levels of World of Warcraft. Players are, however, given a mission: to save the imagination from the forces of evil. While players can’t be killed, they can be reduced to a pile of bricks.
Standalone application – for now
Lego’s multiplayer online gaming has been designed for a standalone application that currently only runs on PCs. The development team is also looking into creating a version that will run on Mac, though.
How the game works

The Lego online game, like many other games, features a health bar. But it also features something new – an imagination bar. Losing all of their health means a player will break up into separate bricks and must be built up again, while imagination allows players to build models. There are many different ways to build with Lego bricks in Lego Universe. ‘Quick building’ allows the construction of a predetermined model, ‘choice building’ allows the player to choose the bricks to use, and ‘custom building’ gives the player complete imaginative control.
A game for everyone
While this game is aimed at a young demographic, it is likely that dads will enjoy it as much as they enjoy playing with their children’s Lego. It will also gain favour with parents who are against violence in games.
